Mail.Art

Mail.Art, or Correspondence Art, is the exchange of artwork in the form of postcards, illustrated letters, and greeting cards through the postal system. This art movement was started by Ray Johnson, a modern American artist whose style fits somewhere between Neo-Dada and Pop Art. Johnson founded the New York Correspondence School. Many feel the exchange of Mail Art through the conventional postal system is more meaningful and elegant in a society whose fast paced lifestyle prevents them from taking time away from cell phones and email.Much of my life has been spent moving from city to city and in an effort to remain in touch with friends I often found myself sending letters... however, being an artist, I found plain text did not express enough of the feelings or thoughts I held. I eventually transitioned into creating works of art with very limited text and found that what I had in fact produced was Correspondence Art, the very ideals that Ray Johnson upheld in his belief that communication is art.

It is through this discovery and love that I feel I must advocate this media to have a recognition beyond the art community.

Every week I sit down and create a new Mail.Art for a friend... I usually have a list of four or five to send. And in through my work, I feel inspired. I feel like I am creating something that another will ultimately cherish. And I feel that I am creating a community of Mail.Art fans.
